Curriculum
Studies have found that learning improves when children are engaged in an enjoyable and meaningful activity.
The Creative Curriculum ®   is used in all our classrooms with the additional component of
The Scholastic Early
Childhood Program ® implemented in our Pre-Kindergarten classrooms. These programs are filled with fun and educational activities
carefully designed to help bring out your child's natural curiosity and encourage a life long joy of learning.
The Creative Curriculum helps children develop a sense of trust and are
encouraged to explore not only materials but also their relationships with peers and adults.
The Toddler Lessons are grouped around four fundamental areas of learning: Alphabet, Colors, Numbers and Shapes.
Please reinforce the building blocks of knowledge for your child by reviewing their lesson for each month.
In addition to our units of study each month the VPK classes will have a list of sight words & spelling words for homework. The purpose of reading is to enjoy and learn from what
is being read. Preschoolers learn early reading skills using site words and flash cards.
Please practice them with your child, this will boost their early reading success.
"Children Learn by Doing"
Through active involvement with their environment, children attempt to make sense of the world around them.
They learn by observing what happens when they interact with materials and other people. They spontaneously engage
in activities such as block building, painting, or dramatic play, adding pieces of information to what they already
know and thereby generating new understandings. By setting clear, age-appropriate expectations of behavior and letting
children know what is expected of them, teachers can engender success and minimize frustration. Children's concerns
about doing the things "right" diminish because they are encouraged to learn from their mistakes, to explore
and to take risks.
From the beginning of the school year our lesson plans have ideas that enhance our preschool curriculum and help young children become familiar with their
classmates and classroom environment. Our school curriculum which is intended for our students to learn is structured in units. The units have themes that include
many topics that are united by a common thread. Our teachers motivate each student in areas of reading, science and mathematics,
writing and social studies. When teachers explain exactly what students are supposed to learn and demonstrate the steps needed to accomplish
a particular academic task, students learn more. Our teachers use positive reinforcement,
"A person who is kind to others is rewarded by kindness offered back to them."
Our teachers are positive in their interactions with each child, the stage is set for increased academic achievement and improved student conduct.
Our VPK classes are preparing each student for kindergarten by giving them a head start with pre-reading, pre-math, language and social skills. Helping them to be able
to adjust to new routines, transitions and to socialize with their peers with appropriate manners. We also implement the learning of "sight" words.
Sight words, almost by definition,
rarely follow any rules or guidelines. They just have to be memorized. However, you and your child can still have fun practicing sight words
and their spelling. Try making flash cards that you can simply hold up, giving your child the opportunity to read each one thus helping to promote reading readiness.
Palmetto Bay Preschool is preparing children today for reading success tomorrow. Telling young children stories can motivate them to want to read. Reading aloud to your child is the single
most important activity for building concepts and skills essential for reading success.
Storytelling can also introduce them to different cultures and
literary traditions before they can read, write and talk about stories themselves.
At PBP we provide
the children with numerous opportunities to see and use both oral and written language. When parents and teachers
work together, everyone benefits.
